bullet  General Notes:

Estella's mother Ida Henry died when Estella was 8 years old. Her father, Charles, put the two girls up for adoption. Minnie went with one family, and Estella was adopted by the Wertman's, the local undertaker. Ernest Schleicher, Estella's son, remembers that Estella was not an orphan and was raised, not adopted, by the Wertman's.

Ernest Schleicher remembers their mother:

Mother as an orphan was taken in and lived with Willis
Wertman in mantzville where she worked as a young girl as telephone switchboard operator for the Mahoning Valley Telephone Co. of which WIllis Wertman, the funeral director, was one of the founders.
I believe Dad was working at the Packerton Shops RR and do not know how they
met but recall his tales of helping with embalming in Wertmans funeral home
where they lived for a year or two and where I was born. Clayton often assisted Willis to embalm corpses, the smell of the formaldehyde stayed in the barn for years after Willis died.

Clayton and Estella took over a store/restaurant/bar/gas station in Clamtown. For travelers it was the gasoline station - 7 gallons for $1. For locals it was the grocery store, restaurant and barroom.
All venues frequently had customers at the same time. How Estella ran form one end of the building to another and retain her sancity is a testimonial to her work ethic.
Estella's chicken and waffle dinners were well known and patronized heavily on weekends. She was a great cook. Even though I was only 10 years old I alone had the weekly task of catching the chickens needed, cutting off the heads with a hatchet, thrusting the bird into a burlap bag until it stopped flopping and bleeding. When the needed number of birds were gathered I would submerge them into a tub of scalding hot water and then pull off ALL their feathers. When they were clean I owuld crumple up some newsprint, ingnite it and singe all the remaining hair. MOther would gut and prepare them for cooking.

An event which always intrigued a nine year old was the three day stay of a traveling medicine show, which arrived several times each summer, located in the large open lot next to the store. There was plenty of room for their tent and small stage, from which they sold miracle cures in small bottles, for all ailments.
