bullet  General Notes:

From Richard Musselman researcher

The Lehigh County Historical Society also had several pages of typed data titled Schleicher Family of Northern Lehigh County, provided by Mr. Raymond Hollenbach and Ms. D. Swezak. These were copied and are attached. Hollenbach and Swezak believe Daniel's father to be John Schleicher who first appears in Heidelberg Township records in 1798. Neither Hollenbach nor Swezak mention a Nicholas Schleicher. A Solome Schleicher b.19 Sep.1798, d.3 Oct. 1866 is listed as either a sister or wife of Daniel. I agree with the assumption she is probably a sister and the same Solome mentioned in the second Deed. [ John is Nicholas' brother, this assumption above is wrong, Jeff Padell]

Lehigh County was not formed until 1812. Until that year the area which became Lehigh was part of Northampton County. Any civil records from the Heidelberg Township area prior to 1812 would have been recorded at the Northampton County Courthouse at Easton, PA.l did check Northampton County Orphans Court abstracts and found a mention of Nicholas Schleicher of Lynn Township in 1808. Lynn Township borders the western edge of Heidelberg Township. This geographical area is very close in proximity to three additional counties, Berks, Schuylkill and Carbon. It is possible Nicholas may have resided in one of these adjacent counties. This could be the reason for no civil records being located in Lehigh Co. It is also possible Nicholas died prior to 1812 and formation of Lehigh. If this proves to be true, any estate records may be in Easton.

Lisa Slaski responds
It appears to me from census records that Nicholas died between 1830 and 1840 and the deed you now have indicates a death of approx. 1831, so I think Richard has looked in the correct place for wills, etc .. It's unlikely that you would find anything in Easton regarding a will. However, it's possible that a land transaction might show up there, as Nicholas married in 1793 and would likely have purchased land in/around that time. This is the same for my ancestor, John Schleicher, who immigrated with Nicholas and so far the earliest record I've found is Hollenbach's reference to the 1798 tax list in Heidelberg

Richard A. Musselman report

Another possible source of records would be to search Township Tax Assessment records. In Northampton County these exist prior to 1800. They have not been copied or transcribed. The originals must be searched at the County Archives. They would list all male residents above the age of 21 in each township.

Lisa Slaski's observation of Musselman's report

It seems that a Township Tax Assessment record search would be of interest, but probably not a "high" priority item. As Hollenbach shows that John was in a 1798 list ... it's likely that both Nicholas and John are in other lists, if we were to look for them. This would probably give us a better idea of where they resided early on, before the 1800 census, but other than satisfying curiosity, I'm not sure what else it would accomplish!

Per Lisa Slaski in response to Musselmans report

We know that Nicholas' wife was Catharina nee Fink, whom he married in 1793, so Salome has to be a daughter, not the widow. And he is found in the census records through 1830, so a death of about 1831 is
reasonable. In 1810 Nicholas was living in Lynn twp, then back to Heidelberg for the 1820 and 1830 census. In the 1840 census, I have a listing for the presumed wife of Nicholas as: Catharine Schleiger, of 60
and less than 70 years old and another female of 40 and less than 50 years old, in Heidelberg, Lehigh, PA I would venture to bet that the 1846 date
is shortly after Catharine died. All of this simply fits too nicely

Richard Musselman thought
Another possible reason for not finding any listing of the name Nicholas may be attributed to the method of recording the name John Nicholas Schleicher. The common practice among German families in this era was to provide a baptism and a common name. John was the most widely used baptism name for males and Maria for females. Usually these names were not used in every day business; only the common middle name was used. It is possible, but certainly unproven, the first John Schleicher in the Heidelberg records may have been John Nicholas Schleicher.

Lisa Slaski's response to this
Although I have never seen Nicholas listed as anything other than Nicholas, I do agree with Richard in that it is always possible that he may have at times been referred to in this manner (with a "baptismal" name first), but I think it's unlikely. However, I disagree that the "first John Schleicher" could be the same person as Nicholas Schleicher in this instance, as I have many examples of documentation which are consistent
with two men, one named Nicholas and one named John, residing in Heidelberg and/or Lynn twp (for example: ship list; census records for both Nicholas
and John in the same year; the documentation of Valentin and his siblings
as children of John and the will of Salome listing the rest of the
Heidelberg Schleicher's, etc., etc.)

Additional Notes:

Meriel Gooding has found a possible link back to Germany as follows (I am putting it in the tree for now)

Hi, Jeff,

Here's what I found and copied on a possible link for our family in Germany.
I'm going to the Family History Center after Christmas to see what I can
find.
Sorry about the way some of the info lined up.

Merry Christmas!
