bullet  General Notes:

From the "Ebert Family of Northern Lehigh County"

The name EBERT is a very common one and there were more than fifteen male persons with the family name Ebert that came to Pennsylvania before the Revolutionary War. However, the Eberts of northern Lehigh County appear to be descendants of only two of them. Most of them are descendants of Hans Michael Ebert.

Actually two Eberts came to Pennsylvania together, on the ship Britannia, on September 21, 1731. They were Hans Jerg Ebert age 30 years, and Hans Michael Ebert age 25 years. The name appear next to each other on the ships list and there seems no doubt that they came together - possibly they were brothers. These early ship lists do not usually give the names of women and children, but there are none with the name Ebert. Therefore it is safe to say that neither Hand Jerg (Georg) Ebert or Hans Michael Ebert were married. However they must have gotten married very soon after their arrival because each one had a son baptized within about two years after the date of arrival.

Hans Michael Ebert, aged 35, arrived in Philadelphia, PA on the ship "Britannia of London" with his brother Hans Georg Ebert, aged 30, 1 Sept 1731. The ship was commanded by Capt Michael Franklin and left Europe from Rotterdam and last from Cowes, England. The ship's records indicate that they were probably single men and it is assumed they most likely were brothers.

They are next found in the records of Falckner Swamp area in New Hanover Twp, Montgomery Co, Pennsylvania. It is here that the baptism of Hans Georg's son Jacob, who was born on 31 May 1733 and baptized on 24 June 1733, was sponsored by Jacob Herman. It was sometime later that Hans Georg Ebert went to Virginia where he settled with his family.

Hans Michael Ebert had a son, Tobias Ebert, born 13 Nov 1733 in Colebrookdale, Bern Twp, Berks Co, Pennsylvania. He was baptized on 2 Dec 1733 and the baptismal sponsor was Tobias Moser. The baptism was performed by Rev John Casper Stoever of the Falckner Swamp area.

In 1748 records indicate that Johan Michael Ebert bought a small tract of land in Heidelberg Twp, Northampton (now Lehigh) county, PA. A short time later he took out a couple more tracts of land in the same area (this land near Pleasant Corner). Records indicate that the Eberts were members of the Heidelberg Church, Heidelberg Twp, Northampton (now Lehigh) Co, PA. However, there are so very few recorded notes about the early members that we don't have much information about Johan Michael's family. A journal by David Schultz has a notation written on 29 Jan 1757: "den 29th Januar ist der kleine Michel, oder Michael Ewert gestorben in Heidelberg Township." (Translation: "on January 29th the little Michael Ebert died in Heidelberg Township). If he was aged 35 when he arrived in Philadelphia, then this would put his age at death at about 61 years. From this notation we can assume Michael was a small sized man in stature.

In the Northampton Co courthouse in Easton, PA there is found an administration of estate for Michael Ebert which names his wife Magdalena and their sons, Tobias and John Ebert, and Andreas Meyer. It may be possible that Andreas Meyer was a son-in-law. Final settlement was not made until 1762. Michael's land was divided between his two sons, Tobias and Johannes.

Most of the land belonging to Johannes was located on the west side of route 309 and included the land along the road to Germansville. Tobias's portion of land was on the east side of route 309.
