Johann Friederich and wife Catharina immigrated to America from Florsbach, Hessen, Hanau, Germany, in the province of Alsace, arriving in Philadelpia, October26, 1767 on the ship Britannia. They settled in the then backwoods Pennsylvania colony of Albany Township, in Berks County. The family at the time of arrival consisted of four sons: John the eldest, Carl Otto born 1760, Johann Petrus better known as Peter born 1762 and Andreas better known as Andrew born 1766. A daughter, Maria Catherine born 1769 and two other sons, Johann Frederick II and Johann George were born in this country. The family attended the Allemangel (All Saints) Church in Albany Township. A tombstone at Zion Church, West Penn Township, Schuylkill County, has been erected indicating that "Johann Friedrick Steigerwalt born April 27, 1730 and his wife, Catharina Heserin born May 15, 1734 emigrated to Pennsylvania on the ship Brittania in 1767 from Furbach [sic], Hanau, Germany." Other family members are also listed on the tombstone.
