"Snyder Occupied With Tailoring"
By Charles Guarig
The National Academy of Heraldry
When the Germanic tribes invaded the Roman Empire, the shild was of utmost importance. These shields were painted with distinctive symbols and colors of the brightest hues. To lose a shield was a great dishonor. The shiled, with spear and sword, was even part of a husband's dowry to his bride, whereas she in turn always presented him with some gift of arms.
As heraldic are became more refined the coats of arms were officially granted, the lion became one of the most popular and widely used heraldic symbols. The antique armorial bearing for the Snyder name is a green shield embellished with a silver winged lion, rampant, holding a staff in the forepaws.
"Traced to Holland"
The national origin of the Snyder surname is traced to Holland and Germany. Like the German Schneider or the Dutch Snijder, it is derived from the term used to describe the occupation of a tailor of garments or cutter of fabric. The handiwork of these craftsmen was vital to the life of the medieval village, as were the craft guilds, formed to regulate the trade of particular crafts.
The earliest record of the name in England appears on tax rolls in Sussex in 1332 for John Snyther, John Snuders was registered in Suffolk in 1674. The Snyders came to America during the 1700's with the Palatines from Rotterdam. The name of Christian Snyder appears in colonial records in 1727. Frans Snyders was the noted Flemish painter of the 16th century who excelled in the presentation of animals. Jacob Snider invented the famous Snider rifle in Philadelphia during the 1800's.
